Will You Grieve Me?

A tribute to those who have lost their lives to COVID in the form of a “gospel house” DJ set.

Objective:

I was one of three graduates from the Pig Iron School of Advanced Performance Training to be commissioned to create a piece for the first season of Halftone, a podcast created by the Fabric Museum and Workshop in Philadelphia, PA. Our main criteria was to create experimental audio works based on the question: whose voices have stories to tell that have not been fully heard?

My goals were to:

  • Create a piece inspired by house music that speaks to the process of dying and grieving

  • Based on my Unitarian Universalist background, think about how to make culturally sensitive but untraditional spiritual music.

Process:

  • Conducted research on dying and the grieving process

  • Did ethnographic work on house music communities

  • Experimented with LogicPro to improvise with different sounds for the finished product

Outcome:

I devised a 20-minute piece with an accompanying transcript to make the piece accessible for deaf and hard of hearing communities.
