Will You Grieve Me?
A tribute to those who have lost their lives to COVID in the form of a “gospel house” DJ set.
Objective:
I was one of three graduates from the Pig Iron School of Advanced Performance Training to be commissioned to create a piece for the first season of Halftone, a podcast created by the Fabric Museum and Workshop in Philadelphia, PA. Our main criteria was to create experimental audio works based on the question: whose voices have stories to tell that have not been fully heard?
My goals were to:
Create a piece inspired by house music that speaks to the process of dying and grieving
Based on my Unitarian Universalist background, think about how to make culturally sensitive but untraditional spiritual music.
Process:
Conducted research on dying and the grieving process
Did ethnographic work on house music communities
Experimented with LogicPro to improvise with different sounds for the finished product
Outcome:
I devised a 20-minute piece with an accompanying transcript to make the piece accessible for deaf and hard of hearing communities.
